You have to want the change, agree with the change, and then hypnosis is an instrument for helping make that change better, faster, and permanent.

When I’m unmotivated, stuck or feel swallowed by life, I have found Hypnotherapy quick and painless to pull me back into the moment, restoring me to a place of possibility. Every hypnotic event has been pleasurable and productive. I have enjoyed my relationship with each Hypnotherapist. However, my hypnotic experience with Kelly with whom I have had two sessions is unique. The change I wanted came about instantaneously and has had comprehensive affect over my well being.

While in trance if Kelly made a suggestion that triggered a defense mechanism or I thought that was the direction she was heading, my resistance would have brought me to full awakening and the sessions would not have been the therapeutic success they have been. Kelly intuitively knew when she had approached that boundary. I don’t think she was conscious of that. There was be a fleeting, gentle pause, as if she were listening to a *knowing*, in her polished, elegantly delivered technique. Each time this happened she resumed with precisely what I was able to accept as truth. This supported me in deep trance. Kelly’s declarations crystallized the birth place of the best current version of me. I was able to untangle barriers defending chaotic thinking patterns keeping me from considering and accepting new, more relevant paths.

What are you Telling Your Body

This month we are going to discuss “Organ Talk.” And no, this is not a conversation about the family jewels!

How we speak to ourselves is so very important. We have over 50 trillion cells in our body and they all have a consciousness, they listen to everything we say and they act accordingly. If we are constantly berating ourselves and beating up on ourselves how do you think our cells (organs, bodies) feel.

I tell my clients to treat their bodies like a two year old child trying to walk. You wouldn’t laugh and make fun of a baby who falls down when trying to walk would you? Imagine saying, “you loser, you can’t even walk, you’re such a failure?” But, this is how we talk to ourselves constantly.

Now if you remember from previous articles, our subconscious mind is what runs the show, it runs our whole body and all it’s functions. The subconscious also takes all of its commands from the conscious mind. It the conscious mind says, “I can’t afford it, I don’t deserve it, I’m not good enough, I’m so stupid, etc.,” the subconscious obliges by saying, “your wish is my command.” It goes even further by saying, “watch, I’ll show you how obedient I am, I’ll create scenarios and events that will reinforce what you just said.”

A friend of mine had been working around the clock and kept saying: “I need a break.” One day as she came out of the house she slipped off the curb and broke her ankle. She was able to take some time off work, but what a way to do it.

Some of you may remember this story, which is very dear and close to my heart. My parents are originally from England and had been living in the USA for 14 years and trying to make a life here. As they got older they realized that they would not be able to retire comfortably in the US and my mom suggested going back to England. My dad was mortified about returning to the cold, miserable British Isles. He kept saying to my mom, “over my dead body am I going back.” They did end up going back and within 6 months he had developed cancer. His subconscious was very obedient and gave him exactly what he kept affirming.

So what is it that you are saying to yourself? Just remember the subconscious takes everything literally and everything you say is an affirmation. read more →

It’s my favorite time of year again, the beginning! Out with the old and in with the new! On New Year’s Eve I have a little ritual that I do every year. I get a large piece of paper and draw a circle in the middle of it. Inside the circle I write all the things I’d like to attract to me in the upcoming year. I use colored markers as I write things like: I exercise 3x a week for 45mins; I have a loving, fulfilling relationship; I weigh 125 pounds by June 2013; I make $500 more per month, etc.

On the outside of the circle I write the opposite, all the things I want to let go of: I lose 15 pounds by June 2013, I end my dysfunctional relationship, I leave my dead-end job. At midnight on New Years Eve (or New Years morning), I light a candle and a read aloud to myself everything that I’ve written inside the circle. As I read each positive affirmation I close my eyes and visualize for a moment those things coming true. I cut out the circle and I put it up on my bathroom mirror where I can see it every day and reread those affirmations on a daily basis, morning and night. I discard the negatives.

By putting up the circle of positive affirmations where you can read them every day you are creating new programming for your subconscious mind!

You’ll notice that I write these positive affirmations in the present tense as if I already have them. I do this to re-program my subconscious mind. The subconscious mind doesn’t know what is real and what is fantasy. By repeating these positive affirmations daily and acting as if these things are already accomplished, you are sending positive thoughts and ideas to your subconscious mind, which believes everything you tell it and will eventually act on those beliefs.

Experiments have been done on basketball players. One group was told to practice every day for 30 mins, the 2nd group was told to sit and visualize practicing for 30 min. a day, the last group was told to do nothing. At the end of the trial it was found that the group who were told to visualize playing had improved their game almost as much as the group that was told to practice every day. The group that was told to do nothing had no improvement at all. This is the power of our subconscious mind.

We have the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is like the captain of the ship. He directs the ship. He sends orders to the men and woman in the engine room. The men and woman in the engine room can be likened to the subconscious mind. They control the boilers, the instruments, the gauges, and so on. The people in the engine room do not know where they are going, they just follow orders. They would go on the rocks if the man on the bridge issued faulty or wrong instructions. The people in the engine room obey him because he is in charge. Because he is supposed to know what he’s doing, the members of the crew do not talk back to the captain. They simply carry out his orders.

In the same way, your conscious mind is the captain and the master of your ship – your body, your environment, and all of your affairs. Your subconscious mind takes the orders you give it based upon what your conscious mind believes and accepts as true.  It does not question the orders on the basis on which they are given.

In order to live a happier more successful life one needs to begin re-programming the subconscious mind by changing all of the negative and self-limiting beliefs, (I can’t lose weight, I’ll never find the right partner, etc.,) to positive self-affirming beliefs.

The quickest way to reprogram the subconscious mind with positive beliefs is through hypnotherapy. In hypnosis the critical faculty of the conscious mind is bypassed and the subconscious mind becomes highly responsive to positive suggestions. Hypnotherapy has helped many, many people live a happier more successful life, from those who want to lose weight and overcome bad habits, to those who want relief from pain or speed up their healing.

Clinical hypnosis in the relief of postmenopausal hot flashes: a randomized controlled trial

Objective: The use of estrogen and progesterone to manage vasomotor symptoms (ie, hot flashes and night sweats) has declined because of concerns about their risks, and there is an increased interest in alternate, effective, and low-risk treatments. This study reports the results of a randomized controlled trial of clinical hypnosis for relieving vasomotor symptoms among postmenopausal women.

Methods: This is a randomized, single-blind, controlled, clinical trial involving 187 postmenopausal women reporting a minimum of seven hot flashes per day (or at least 50 hot flashes a week) at baseline between December 2008 and April 2012. Eligible participants received five weekly sessions of either clinical hypnosis or structured-attention control. Primary outcomes were hot flash frequency (subjectively and physiologically recorded) and hot flash score assessed by daily diaries on weeks 2 to 6 and week 12. Secondary outcomes included measures of hot flash–related daily interference, sleep quality, and treatment satisfaction.

Results: In a modified intent-to-treat analysis that included all randomized participants who provided data, reported subjective hot flash frequency from baseline to week 12 showed a mean reduction of 55.82 (74.16%) hot flashes for the clinical hypnosis intervention versus a mean reduction of 12.89 (17.13%) hot flashes for controls (P < 0.001; 95% CI, 36.15-49.67). The mean reduction in hot flash score was 18.83 (80.32%) for the clinical hypnosis intervention as compared with 3.53 (15.38%) for controls (P < 0.001; 95% CI, 12.60-17.54). At 12-week follow-up, the mean reduction in physiologically monitored hot flashes was 5.92 (56.86%) for clinical hypnosis and 0.88 (9.94%) for controls (P < 0.001; 95% CI, 2.00-5.46). Secondary outcomes were significantly improved compared with controls at 12-week follow-up: hot flash–related interference (P < 0.001; 95% CI, 2.74-4.02), sleep quality (P < 0.001; 95% CI, 3.65-5.84), and treatment satisfaction (P < 0.001; 95% CI, 7.79-8.59).

Conclusions: Compared with structured-attention control, clinical hypnosis results in significant reductions in self-reported and physiologically measured hot flashes and hot flash scores in postmenopausal women. read more →
